Neil Wingert reminded the attendees that Hooked on Books will be provided at Chanhassen High School on Feb. 8, 9 AM to noon.
Matt Podhradsky asked for confirmations of intent to contact potential sponsors for the Miracle Field. Jean Heyduck sent an email on Feb. 6 with the following link to an explanatory YouTube video about Miracle Fields. Link.
Erin Kerber welcomed Pat Wittrock into our Rotary Club. Pat spent her career as an educator in a variety of positions in Carver County schools. She is glad to be part of a group of like-minded folks that care about and contribute to their community.
HAPPY DOLLARS
Gretchen Oppriecht initiated our weekly set of donations. She was happy that Chaska High School fielded seven teams for the Knowledge Bowl competition that was held on Feb. 4. This link will provide information about school’s Academic Teams: LINK. Five of the teams will advance to regional competition. John Roebke and Greg Anderson were also in good moods that moved them to donate.
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Wayne Ward provided the flag from the Nelson Bay Rotary Club, located in the town of the same name in New South Wales, Australia. The club is near Sydney, and Wayne was in the area in 2012 visiting his son who works there. Wayne showed photos of golfing hazards that are not seen at Hazeltine, fireworks that rival those at Chaska’s Fourth of July, and a demonstration of comparative biology that is available in the Land Down Under that set the stage for before/after photos of Wayne’s grandson.
ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT -Marcos Alonsos
Marcos skillfully described his adventures during the past week. Attending a college basketball game with Ken Hiller, Marcos was featured in the sports page coverage! (Waldo must have been nearby.) A visit to a guitar store activated an untapped part of his talents, a juicy Lucy burger did the same for his taste buds, the movie Fargo sparked his interest in wood-chippers, and Marcos still found the energy for climbing “the cherry thing” at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
PRESENTATION: Martha Engel – Intellectual Property
Pat Schaffran was able to make a rare appearance at our meeting and introduced Matha Engel, a partner at the law firm of Best and Flanagan. Martha’s academic background put her in touch with many of our members – a degree in mechanical engineering (Marquette U.) then a J.D. from law school (William Mitchell in St. Paul).
With a thorough slide presentation and her succinct experience in explaining complex details, Martha helped us understand Intellectual Property, Copyrights and use of photographs, Trademarks and product images, applying for Patents and their protections, Trade Secrets, Work Products, and Website Domain Names.
She humbly described a prominent resolution of a trademark case that resulted in a Win-Win for both parties. It is probably a very rare instance where a craft beer and a museum’s T-Rex have been joined in a legal proceeding that had a happy ending. Martha provided other examples that simplified the other aspects of her law firm’s repertoire that help our capitalist entities smoothly contribute to our country’s economy.
Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
