Keith Payne made us aware of several District 5950 events:
Jan. 27: Friendship & Funds Fest
Feb. 1 + 8: Mastering Linked-In
Feb. 19: Rotary Awareness Day at the state capitol.
Keith pointed us towards the Polio Plus Society of District 5950 and encouraged donations through the Rotary Foundation. My.rotary.org/donate
Hooked on Books needs Rotarians to help with book distribution on Feb. 10, 9 AM – noon, at Chanhassen High School. We support this every year, and participants come away from the experience with big smiles! LINK.
Michelle Kraus asked for job descriptions from the members with projects, functions and activities that keep the club functioning and fun.
Speaking of fun, Michelle recognized the participants in last week’s Bingo game and reminded us that our club raised money at the game and avoided the cost of our breakfast.
Michelle explained that the Speaker schedule will be depending on club members arranging each week’s presentation. She also asked for us to step up into a leadership position within the club as our President-elect.
FINEMASTER
George Glaros gave us famous quotations but only 2 tables retained the accurate knowledge to avoid being fined. Michelle Kraus took our minds off our defeat when she provided many Happy Dollars.
EXCHANGE STUDENT
Viola Bavastro has moved her residence to the host family of Andy Haugen, and has started her next challenging semester at Chaska High School.
PRESENTATION: Engineers Without Borders, Matt Wessale
From the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Minnesota Professional Chapter website (link) – “EWB-USA builds a better world through engineering projects that empower communities to meet their basic human needs and equip leaders to solve the world’s most pressing challenges. We are a group of professional engineers, architects, scientists and others who aim to implement EWB-USA’s mission. The Minnesota Professional Chapter has project teams implementing solutions for communities in need across the globe. We also provide professional mentors for the student chapters at the University of Minnesota and MNSU Mankato. In the world’s toughest places, EWB-USA is partnering with communities to meet their basic human needs. We’re building footbridges to provide pathways to opportunities. We’re installing solar panels to bring light where it is dark. We’re digging for water so hope can spring from the ground. Each project builds the foundation for a community to thrive.” The photo below shows the preliminary work for a school in the cloud-forest mountains of Guatemala.
Matt Wessale is the EWB chapter President and Bob Meurer is the VP of International Projects for the group. Bob showed us photos of previous and ongoing projects that perfectly align with Rotary’s established goals of providing clean water and education and nurturing world peace. The funding for the EWB work comes from company and church sponsors, individuals, and many Rotary clubs within our District 5950. Our club has donated to a few of their projects that entail many years of design, engineering, construction, local partnerships, team visits and ongoing sustainability. The EWB website contains photos and details of their projects.
Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
