Club Announcements

INVOCATION: John Roebke

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Michelle Kraus asked us purchase tickets for our Music Fest on October 7. She encouraged whole-table responses by matching them with her own contribution.  Link to event website.

  • Cindy Anderson reminded us of the club’s Fall Social on September 23 at Phil Solseng’s “Tin Shed” located at 16315 Jonathan Carver Parkway.  Her studio and others will be open as part of the Carver County Arts Consortium “Art Wander”.

FINEMASTER: George Glaros

George once again stepped into the breech and assaulted our trivial pursuit of factoids!  True – False questions gave us a fighting chance, but three rounds of questions ultimately were too much for all tables to escape unharmed!  Happy Dollars were given by Wayne Ward, John Roebke, Michelle Kraus, Andy Haugen, and Keith Payne.

ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT - Viola Bavastro was at Chaska High School

PRESENTATION: Erika Rivera Kennedy, Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 to October 15 – provided Chaska Rotarian Erika Rivera Kennedy the opportunity to introduce last week’s speaker and to deliver today’s presentation. This 30-day period commemorates the first day designated as the start of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain.  It also includes many dates of importance in the Hispanic community: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their anniversary of independence on September 15; Mexico commemorates its independence on September 16; Chile commemorates its independence on September 18; and the celebration Columbus Day or Día de la Raza.  Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements for the United States.

Hispanic and Latino are often used interchangeably though they actually mean two different things. Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations, while Latino refers to people who are from or descended from people from Latin America. Erika showed slides with population data and summaries of the contributions from Latino and Hispanic scientists, artists, entertainers and sports figures. With the Event Center’s tasty breakfast burritos still on our plates, Erika called attention to the important influence of Latin food on our diverse American tastes.  The upcoming Latin Music and Food Festival, sponsored by the City of Chaska Parks and Recreation department will enable us to celebrate those aspects of Hispanic culture: Friday, Sept. 22, Firemen’s Park. Link to website and details.

Erika works for Carver County’s Health and Human Services and contributes her time to the Latino Chamber of Commerce and state’s Latino community organizations.  Her contact information: 612-735-3504, EKennedy@co.carver-mn.us.

a. Need Alumni Coordinator & President-Elect – Michelle is still working on President-Elect. Going to delete Alumni Coordinator position.

b. Need dates and dollars for individual areas

c. What fundraisers, community projects, or vocational services are we missing?

ITEMS NEEDING ACTION

1. Santa Elena Water System project (see attached) No additional donation at this time.

a. Are we interested in a presentation from EWB-MN on their projects in Guatemala?

b. They are partnering with Chanhassen Rotary on a new district grant application. Would we be interested in joining as a donor to this project?

c. Looks like we already donated $500 earlier this year. Matt or Kristy please confirm? Yes, $500 donated in May of 2023.

2. Southern Valley Alliance (see attached) No donation at this time. a. I am reaching out today to express Southern Valley Alliance’s urgent need for your assistance to construct a new facility to serve our communities better. Our current

building is limited in space, resources, and accessibility, which hinders our ability to accommodate the growing number of survivors seeking our help.

3. Maui Relief Fund – Club will provide link for members to contribute if desired. a. Many of you have asked the District how you can help fellow Rotarians and residents of Maui after the recent devastating fires. I know that several clubs are already undertaking fundraising efforts, but for Rotarians still looking for a way to help, I am sharing a newsletter that Rotarians in our Brooklyn Park Rotary Club forwarded to me from the Hanelei Bay Rotary Club in Hawaii. It provides information on the Maui Fire Relief Fund set up by the Rotary District 5000 Foundation, as well as other organizations that are taking donations to help those in need. If the links do not come through in this email, you can find the newsletter online here: https://mailchi.mp/88c2455f8f13/rotary-club-of-hanalei-bay-august-newsletter-15379492?e=e61a0dd0e5

4. Literacy Project – tabled for now as nobody had time to investigate. a. We’d like to introduce you to THE ROTARY IDEALS LITERACY PROJECT. In addition to supporting literacy, it gives your club a way to share THE FOUR-WAY TEST and SERVICE ABOVE SELF with the children in your community. Plus, this project can be implemented on almost any budget. We invite you to visit our WEBSITE: https://www.rotaryidealsliteracy.com and/or watch our short YOUTUBE VIDEO: https://youtu.be/uJMEmx3v2xk Thank you for your time.

5. Thank you from Matt Udermann (see attached)

6. Thank you from His House (see attached)

ITEMS FOR UPDATE OR DISCUSSION

1. Chaska River City Days Wine Tent Review (Cindy) a. What do we want to do for RCD in 2024? Tabled for now. Matt P is setting up a meeting with Lion’s Club to see how we can partner together.

2. Pond Hockey Rink Materials/Boards (Robert) a. The Boards are currently on FB Marketplace. See discussion above.

3. Chaska Rotary Music Fest Update Oct 7th (Matt/Michelle/Keith) – Keith is paying the interns $50 per hour to place flyers on windshields in major parking lots. Keith meets with the committee every Monday and will know more how projections look. There is still work to do to make this event a success. Every member should do everything to promote this event. Gary Cooper suggested making it easier for members to buy tickets with sign up list so that the fees would be eliminated. Board discussed that this would be require paper tickets and it is more productive to keep all tickets under one software to track sales and scans of tickets.

4. Fall Social Update (Cindy) a. To be held on Saturday, September 23rd at Solseng’s farm: 16315 Jonathan Carver Parkway in Carver from 5:30pm-8:30pm

6. Rotary Job descriptions (Michelle) – working on these

7. Strive (Bob) – working on establishing start date, which will probably be Oct 12. Bob is concerned with not having participants/mentors as we lost several regular attendees (Ray Schalow, Stever Mueller).

8. Other Business –

1. Chaska Cares Golf generated $10,000 in sponsorships for the Club and additional money from golfing.

2. Pat will be gone for 3 weeks starting Oct 27. Keith Payne will check mailbox and make deposits in her absence.

3. Michelle will be hosting once a quarter happy hours at her house to increase comradery.

4. Cindy Anderson put together Rotary shirts for music festival and other events. As new members join, they will have opportunity to purchase shirts.

5. Keith Payne suggested getting sponsorships from various companies within the club to fund scholarship program.

6. Michelle proposes that we need to hold a monthly fundraising event; possibly Bingo. Just to raise awareness in community and generate some funds for the Club.
