Club Announcements

  • Mike Hwang, Chaska City Council, described his future role in helping direct the electronic publication of the Carver County Local News.  Working with Dan Keyport and others, Mike welcomed volunteers to bring community communication back into our lives.  There will be an implementation meeting at 6 PM on Oct. 9 in Chanhassen at the building that houses A Better Society. Link: https://www.facebook.com/CarverCountyLocalNews.
  • Cindy Anderson again asked for participation at our Pot Luck Social at the Solseng’s shed on September 28.  Good food, Rotarians, and art studios!
  • Erin Kerber thanked all the Rotarians and family members who contributed their hours and energy into the Music Fest, especially the planner Keith Payne and Michelle Kraus.  The weather cooperated; the food trucks provided a variety of treats; the bands presented a range of music that appealed to all tastes; and our raffle ticket-sellers, age-checkers, wristband-wrappers and beverage-servers enabled the event to publicize the Miracle Field and our Service to Others.  Please check out our club’s web page link and thank Jean Heyduck for her work posting photos of the Fest and keeping our presence up to date!

  • In that same arena, Greg Anderson has been innovative with inclusion of club member interviews on our Facebook page.  He’s also been providing photos and summaries of our meetings.  Our public “face” is now including our images and our thoughts that promote our role in the community.  Thank you Greg! • REMINDER: starting October 3, BYO breakfast to future Rotary meetings.

  • Another of our international Rotary Club flags was hung up on the blue cloth.  The visit to St. Petersburg, Russia was recalled by Phil Solseng.  Dan Keyport, Rick Ford, Al Grover and Vic Benetti appear to also have been there, and within their carry-on luggage, they managed to bring a metal bench from Chaska!

ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT - Marcos Alonsos

Marcos shared his enjoyment of watching his first American high school football game.  Still practicing and playing soccer, he is planning to march along with his team in the school’s Homecoming Parade on Sept. 27.

HAPPY DOLLARS

No Finemaster this morning.  Happy Dollars were donated by Wayne Ward, Phil Solseng, Vic Benetti and Michelle Kraus who reported that the Music Fest Raffle winner should also be happy to receive about $5,700.  We’ll find out more about the Fest revenue in another meeting.

Sam Pertz, Lake Waconia Park & Coney Island Project  Link
Wayne Ward introduced Sam Pertz, the Parks and Trails Supervisor for Carver County Parks.  Packing 45 slides into a 25-minute presentation, Sam covered the wide range of features and activities provided by our county’s Parks organization.  Baylor Park, Lake Minnewashta Park and Lake Waconia Park are the main events, but the abundant Trail system is the ribbon around their delights. Notable changes have been made at Lake Waconia Park, so most of the presentation focused there.

The Lakeside Ballroom that provided the venue for large events since 1973 has been replaced by the Paradise Commons building that opened this year. The other big change has been the transformation of the lake’s Coney Island into a park destination.  Sam reviewed the historic background and its reversion into its natural environment.  A second revision has started so it again becomes more accommodating to those boating there in the summer, or skiing/snowshoeing there in the winter.  The island is considered an archaeological gem because its layers of history have remained (relatively) undisturbed.  Three hundred one-meter squares were dug to initially assess the historical indigenous presence and resulting interpretive awareness displays are planned.  Although visiting, picnicking and hiking are now allowed, camping and overnight stays are not.

The Parks website provides much more information about all the parks and trails (link).

Upcoming Invocation

Note from John Roebke:  Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote.  Brief 20 – 30 seconds.  Light-hearted is okay.  Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self.  Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations.  Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com.  I will be glad to name another.  If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me.  Remind me.  If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
