ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

EXCHANGE STUDENT - Marcos Alonso
Marcos has become an official Sybnski and moved in with Matt and his family. Not quite ready for a Mayflower moving van, Marcos is amazed at how much his belongings have increased since he crossed the Atlantic. Recently, Marcos spent the night in White Bear Lake with other Exchange students as they provided wisdom to the American group that will be abroad in the next school year.
PRESENTATION: USA Bike Trip, Katy Holub + Scott Freitag
Mike Wentzell introduced former Chaska Rotarian Katy Bloomquist Holub and her husband Scott Freitag. They are both members of the Park Rapids, MN Rotary. A video segment produced by ESPN provided a visual sense of Scott’s bicycle journey through all 33 perimeter states. Throughout the route he and Katy spoke to many organizations to publicize the need for men to have blood tests to determine their level of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). They also promoted more understanding of mental illness and schizophrenia, which had led to Scott’s son committing suicide. Eleven thousand miles of cycling was interspersed with trips back to Minnesota for cancer treatments and hormone therapy. Katy commanded the truck and RV as well as the logistics for the journey. Facebook posts and blogging kept thousands of people informed about the challenges and successes the courageous pair faced.
Scott shared his experiences with unrelenting and unforgiving weather, dead-end roads, sharing the highway with inattentive drivers, and continually confronting his own mental and emotional attitude. “Living in the moment” allowed Scott to progress about 300 miles each week. Katy’s steadfast determination and organized mind permitted her to move her law practice into an RV, and her fearless character became the glue that kept them in line with their goals.
Contact information: phone Katy 912-810-1030, Scott 763-245-0754 . Website www.milesformoney.org Email: milesformoneyusa@gmail.com. Donations to further awareness of prostate cancer and schizophrenia are still being accepted through their website.
