HAPPY DOLLARS
Happy people this morning: Mark Omann, John Roebke, Phil Solseng, Ken Hiller, Sheryl Hough and Wayne Ward (he’s almost ALWAYS happy!)
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Ken Hiller pinned up the flag from the Ankara, Turkiye club. It was brought to us by the exchange student Simden Erler, 2008-09. Ken also visited the Simden and her club in 2013. Here is the club’s Facebook link.
EXCHANGE STUDENT - Marcos Alonso
Marcos showed photos of his paella creation for the Szybnski’s and of his fishing success. There was a good tennis match, and one other that wasn’t. Marcos and our interns graduated on May 29, at the 3M Arena in Minneapolis. The ceremony was streamed, live. Matt Szybnski hosted a celebration on May 31. A few of us and several of his classmates enjoyed Matt’s house and hospitality.
Mark Omann introduced Chayna Claeys, an architect specializing in sustainable design, construction and operation. She lives in Chaska but is often at the site of the library, which sounds more like a museum. Former Rotarian and architect Jon Thorstenson had connections with her, and she remembered his trademark pink socks. Chayna grew up in North Dakota and learned to prioritize frugality. She now equates that belief with sustainability, and that was the focus of her presentation about the presidential library that is being built in Medora, North Dakota near the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Chayna works with JLG Architects and is their Chief LEED Manager for sustainability. LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council is the result of building according to principles of sustainability and minimal impacts on energy and the environment. More about LEED: link.
The library’s construction is scheduled for completion in July 2026. Chayna used architectural plans and conceptual depictions to provide a visual idea of what to expect. A unique design will incorporate a roof that is planted with prairie vegetation and the library is planned to result in low/zero impacts on energy, water, waste and carbon release. Phil Solseng has a nearby property, so we’ll depend on him to provide us with an update on the library’s opening.
Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
