Last Week's Presentation
Invocation: John Roebke
Erin Kerber introduced our 2018-19 Brazilian Exchange Student Julia Moschioni. Visiting Minnesota during a break in her semester at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, Julia shared her thoughts and photos from the 9 months she spent with us. Erin and her family, and Matt Szybnski and his family hosted Julia, and the photos and her comments provided testimony that everyone involved enjoyed the time spent together. Ken and Barb Hiller took on the role of Julia’s adopted grandparents, and Andy Haugen partnered with Erin to ensure all the administrative activities and requirements were met.
Everyone in attendance at our meeting was impressed with the English fluency, sense of humor, and obvious comfort level Julia displayed. She started going to Rotary meetings with her father when she was two years old, then joined the Rotaract youth organization as a teen. The rigorous selection process to become an Exchange student posed no problem, so she was a little surprised when she did not get her first choice of destinations (Belgium). Looking back at her experiences, she was glad she ended up in Chaska, but noted that she had never expected the climate here to be so cold, especially because she did not bring any winter clothing.
Julia recalled that she spent many hours of class and schoolwork required by her 12 subjects. One of those classes was architecture, and she is currently focusing on that in her college courses. She is in her 3rd year of a 5-year curriculum. Julia is aiming to specialize in residential design.
After showing photos of her experiences and the delights of the friendships she forged, Julia was thankful for her opportunity to learn about the USA and the people that were part of her life here.
Some appropriate and coincidental trivia: the motto of Virginia Tech is Ut Prosim / That I May Serve.
Club Announcements and Updates
We earned $500 in grant for member drive initiative!!
Finemaster and Happy Dollars: Steve Wein held the reins of the Finemaster wagon and had us racing through our memories and re-visiting geography lessons. From the locations listed on a handout, we were directed to tally the places we had visited, and the tables that did not surpass the highest average had to pay a fine. It was hard to tell what actually happened, but somehow the pig was stuffed full! Happy Dollars came from Mike Fahey, Gary Cooper, Dan Keyport, Wayne Ward, Vic Benetti, Steve Wein, Erin Kerber and Julia Moschioni.
Gary Cooper reminded us of the STRIVE meeting to be held on March 17, when Dr. Les Greene will speak. Erin Kerber will present her thoughts about finance management on March 24.
Keith Payne promoted participation in the preparation and production of the Pond Hockey tournament on January 26-29 in 2023.
Dan Keyport recommended that we contribute to the Rotary Foundation as we finish out the 3rd fiscal quarter of the Foundation year. Gretchen Oppriecht directed our attention to recent emails that indicated Foundation contributions can be earmarked for helping projects associated with the Ukraine humanitarian relief.
Gary Goeman is leading our annual Scholarship program and asked for more help reviewing applications. He immediately had volunteers who exemplified the Rotary willingness to provide “Service Above Self”.
