Last Week's Presentation

John Roebke helped administer the 2020 Census in Carver County, so naturally, he introduced our speaker. Dr. Susan Brower is the Minnesota State Demographer and directs the MN State Demographic Center. Susan became the State Demographer in February 2012. In that capacity, she travels the state talking with Minnesotans about the new social and economic realities that are brought about by recent demographic shifts. Susan's work applies an understanding of demographic trends to changes in a range of areas including the state's economy and workforce, education, health, immigration, and rural population changes. Susan joined the State Demographic Center after working as a researcher on the Minnesota Compass project at Wilder
Research in St. Paul. Prior to that, she worked at the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan. Susan earned her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Michigan, specializing in demography and family sociology. She also holds a master's degree in public policy from Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Brower skillfully presented data about the census results pertinent to Minnesota and often specifically about Chaska. It turns out that our citizens are very cooperative, leading the states by having a 75% response rate. Chaska was even better with a rate of 83%. Minnesota was able to retain the same number of Congressional Representatives with a margin of only 26 people! Carver County had the highest population % growth in the state and the metro area defied the trend
elsewhere by increasing its urban population.

Her presentation of racial demographics introduced the acronym BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) which describes 23% of the census responders in Chaska. Susan also discussed the demographics of age and availability to be part of the state’s workforce. When all the baby boomers have retired, there will be even fewer to fill the available jobs.

Club Announcements and Updates

Chaska Police Community Liaison Julie Janke attended our meeting and explained the value of our support to the Heroes and Helpers event on Saturday, December 4th from 9:00 AM to noon. This is a collaboration with the Chaska Target store, Chaska’s Police, Explorer Scouts, and Community Emergency Response Team to provide
presents and gift cards to selected members of the community. Our financial donations and gift-wrapping help were welcomed. Thank you to Sheryl Hough for representing Rotary at the gift wrapping event at Target. Please check the Chaska Police Facebook page to see their thanks for our support.

Martha Brannon also joined us for our meeting, representing His House Foundation. Martha explained their mission is to provide food through the Abundance program for people “living on the margin” and housing stabilization whenever possible. Our “pass the hat” financial contributions will provide vouchers for laundry services at the Chaska Laundry. Contact: 612-325-4693, HisHouseNonProfit@gmail.com

Gretchen Oppriecht let Lisa Anderson and the rest of us know that Lisa is our newest member! Her photo will be included when her name badge is presented.

Dan Keyport asked for a skilled volunteer to help construct a pond hockey rink.

Matt Podhradsky invited us to join the “Chaska 100” to fund holiday decorations for the city that will be lit this Sunday, Dec. 5. Several Rotarians won raffle prizes on a chilly but sociable Sunday evening.

Sheryl Hough reviewed the activities associated with our annual holiday celebration, auction, raffle, and money board hoopla. More details are included in Sheryl’s email to members sent Nov. 30.

After breakfast, Gary Cooper headed out with the Rotarian STRIVE Mentors to be with the STRIVE students as they prepared meal bags at Feed My Starving Children. In only 60 minutes the STRIVE seniors and Chaska Rotarians packed 55 boxes which totals 11,880 meals! That feeds almost 32 kids for an entire year. Our Hawk students did an amazing job. #SoarHawks
