Dan Keyport invited us to attend the annual HERF cigar-honoring assembly at his house and garden, on Sept. 12. Donations will be made to the 360 Journalism program at the University of St. Thomas. (Link)
Phil Solseng welcomed us, our guests and potential new members to our Fall Social on Sept. 27. This is coincident with the Carver County Arts Consortium’s Art Wander, held Sept 26-28. (Link) Talk with Cindy Anderson to get a good dose of enthusiasm about the Art Wander.
Lindsey Hagen wanted us to consider attending events held by the Southwest Chamber of Commerce. Check their calendar in the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter.
Matt Podhradsky updated the current revenue from raffle ticket sales ($5780) and encouraged us to keep working toward our $40,000 goal. Please turn in completed stubs and proceeds to Erin. Neil Wingert requested a partner (or two) to sell tickets at the Latin Music and Food Festival on Sept. 12.
HAPPY DOLLARS
John Roebke, Greg Anderson and Matt Podhradsky were our happy contributors today.
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Phil Solseng provided a nicely designed and thorough history of the featured flag from Rakkestad, Norway. Phil’s household hosted Youth Exchange student Anne Bjoner during her 1991-92 visit, and they have kept in close contact with visits.
EXCHANGE STUDENT – Ane Otsby - Absent due to School Commitment
PRESENTATION: Global Travelers and the Amazon Rain Forest, Ken Hiller
Ken Hiller is a member of the e-club of Rotary Global Travelers. They meet via Zoom two times per month and occasionally in person somewhere in the state and associated with service projects. He reviewed some of those activities and then treated us to video production that let us experience the Global Traveler visit to Manaus, Brazil and a 4-day boat tour of the Amazon basin. This was NOT a mint-on-the-pillow vacation! Sleeping on the deck, kept dry (somewhat) by hanging tarps, and lulled to sleep (?) by the sounds of the rainforest, the group appeared happy.
Visits to indigenous communities on the river, service projects delivering materials, fishing for piranha while retaining all necessary digits, and swimming with pink river dolphins (link) were memories that Ken shared in the video.
Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations.
