PRESENTATION:Heart Health Advocacy + AED Preparedness, Emily Schumacher
George Glaros introduced Emily Schumacher, Miss Minnesota 2024, so she could talk about her advocacy for Heart Health and sudden cardiac arrest preparedness. Emily represented the title of Miss Mankato and was selected for the state title in June 2024. She worked at Mayo Clinic Health Systems as a Certified Nursing Assistant, and a sales associate at J. Longs Lifestyle shop. She graduated from Northern State University in 2022 after studying biology and chemistry.
Her Miss Minnesota year of service has been devoted to advocating heart health and cardiac arrest response. Emily is partnering with MN Senator Julia Coleman to promote H.F. 1175 which seeks to provide financial assistance for mental health services. Also, S.F. 1457 which requires schools to develop a cardiac emergency response plan that would be distributed to staff, coaches and health care professionals working at school activities. Emily shared a handout from the American Heart Association that detailed the components of a response plan.
Emily also promotes the Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation (Play for Patrick) which was created to honor a high school hockey player who died of sudden cardiac arrest. The Foundation offers free heart screens throughout the metro area to identify young people 14-24 with potential heart problems. Link.
She followed her slide presentation with a demonstration of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and an Automated External Defibrillator made by Avive Solutions Link. Emily encouraged us to always know the location of AEDs and to be ready to respond quickly to a heart emergency. Our discussion included personal recollections by Bob Roepke and several Rotary members who assisted in the response to his cardiac arrest.

Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
