Bob Chinnock reminded us that the STRIVE meeting will be Nov. 9, at 9:25AM at the Chaska High School.

Michelle Kraus invited us to the Festival of Trees Benefit for Auburn Homes, held at Bavaria Downs on Thursday, November 17, 2022. The event will start the holiday season with dinner and dancing among the beautiful designer Christmas trees. All proceeds will directly impact the lives of the residents and staff at Auburn Homes & Services. Tickets and sponsorships are obtained through https://e.givesmart.com/events/qgx.

FINEMASTER + HAPPY DOLLARS

Michelle Kraus served up a Finemaster
no-calorie holiday treat by having us play
charades. “Hip-hop music”, “Top Gun”,
“Marilyn Monroe”, “Giraffe”, and “My Big,
Fat Greek Wedding” were all identified
correctly. Michelle wrote a check to the
Blue Pig and we were all smiling at the
great clues and guesses. Happy Dollars
were donated by Mike Fahey, Phil Solseng
and Michelle.

ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT: Natasha Palmelund

Natasha experienced her first Halloween and its attendant costumes (she wore two), parties, and candy. Think of how she will explain this to her friends in Denmark!

PRESENTATION:
Latino V.O.I.C.E.S. – Grecia Lozano

Erika Kennedy introduced Grecia Lozano, Mary Fuentes, and Briana Fernandez from Latino Voices. Grecia is the Executive Director of the group that was formed in 2019 with a mission to connect and inform the Latino Community in Carver County with resources, news, events, and activities that will improve their livelihoods and give them opportunities to thrive and succeed. Grecia and other members help to build bridges between all local communities and local organizations to learn about the Hispanic Culture and to
recognize the contributions of Latinos to Carver County. VOICES is an acronym: Voice, Organize, Inspire, Connect, Equip, Serve.

Grecia provided us with her immigration story and background of her first experiences coming to Carver County in 2000 – 11 years old, spoke no English and was faced with a culture she didn’t understand. As she grew up, she was also faced with trying to access services and resources that were meant to help her but had barriers of language and bureaucracy that seemed insurmountable. Latino Voices MN was organized to reduce those hurdles and bring about mutual understanding between providers and recipients.

Grecia pointed out the example of the city’s proposed removal of the businesses in the mall across from the American Legion, the library/city hall, and the Chaska Historical Society. While that action can be seen by some as consistent with long-term plans, it would also be removing the nucleus of businesses and services that are the center of Chaska’s Latino community.

Latino Voices, MN provides one-on-one help to Hispanic (Spanish- speaking) and Latino (coming from Latin and South America) residents to work through language difficulties, administrative and service processes, and government and organizational procedures. They provide information and education at community events such as the recent Day of the Dead display at the Chaska Community Center. Grecia indicated we could help her efforts by volunteering to work with her, spreading the word about the group’s services, or by donating financial support.
