Club Announcements

Invocation: John Roebke

Matt Podhradsky thanked those who helped conduct the Pond Hockey Preview project last Saturday. About $2500 was raised. Erin Kerber was a winner of one of the Money Boards, and she donated her treasure back to our club.

Ken Hiller called attention to the Rotary support for Ukrainian refugees and the partnership with the organization Alight.

FINEMASTER

Jodi Hesse brought forth Trivia questions about the month of February. Each table collaborated to establish their answers to questions about the month’s Zodiac signs, gemstone, flower, full moon, presidents and 29th day. As always in this type of contest, winners felt triumphant and everyone else paid a fine.

Happy Dollars came only from Dan Keyport. The rest of us were still calculating the odds on being born on the Leap
Day.

ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT - Natasha Palmelund

Natasha had stories to share about visiting Arizona, touching cactus, handling a pistol (not common in Denmark), trying to photograph the Grand Canyon, competing in the high school’s DECA competition and her final downhill ski competition. To answer a question about our exchange STUDENT, her courses this semester include Global Art and Jewelry, Ceramics, Finance, German, English and Physical Education and Wellness. No extra credit was given for her Arizona adventure ☹.

PRESENTATION:
Liina Roth, The Estonia Singing Revolution

Dan Keyport introduced a fellow cigar afficionado, Liina Roth. She shared her memories of the “Singing Revolution” in Estonia in the late 1980s, as the country
strived for and gained their independence from the Soviet Union’s occupation. Liina’s personal anecdotes and family tragedies illustrated the history and tribulations of Estonia and the Soviet oppression. These served as powerful reminders of the human consequences that lie beyond the current headlines about the war in Ukraine.

Liina’s recollection of the power of music was inspirational and should prompt us to explore the story of how spontaneous and patriotic bravery help Estonia come together at a time of Soviet disarray. She explained events such as the “Baltic Way” – where people joined hands and formed a human chain 430 miles long across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on 23 August 1989.

Every five years, in the city of Tallinn, about 20,000 singers entertain 200,000 in the audience with historic and patriotic songs and dances. Ken Hiller, Dan Keyport and Tom Allmere, our Estonian exchange student attended the event in 2014. The next Song and Dance Festival will be in 2025.

Liina moved to the USA in 1998 and works as a realtor with Edina Realty.
