Erin Kerber would like to receive the presentation materials from speakers by Tuesday in the scheduled week, so she had time to upload them. She also needs attendance intentions for the Klein Award breakfast on March 13.
Mike Wentzell highlighted the upcoming March 6 presentation by former Rotarian Katy Holub which will highlight her husband’s cross-country bike journey.
Bob Chinnock reminded STRIVE mentors of today’s meeting at the Career Resource room at Chaska High School. Celi Haga is calling for members help to join the Rotary Scholarship Selection team.
Good attendance today!

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Dan Keyport was in a jovial frame of mind when he presented the Rotary club flag from Indore, India. He left us with cravings for samosas and tandoori chicken! In case you missed last week’s meeting, the flag from Marcos’ sponsoring club has a depiction of a shoe, signifying the cobbler industry that helped the town grow in prominence within Spain.
ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT - Marcos Alonso
Marcos will fondly remember the two-day cancelation of classes due to our recent polar vortex. Watching Ferris Bueler’s Day Off seemed appropriate. He celebrated his Half-birthday with cribbage victories and added to his cultural experiences with a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Dan Keyport introduced Mike Huang, former Chaska City Council member and currently leading the Carver County Local News (CCLN). The web-based publication was created last fall to provide trustworthy, timely, local, nonpartisan news and information to Carver County communities. Mike described the vision for the CCLN – “Quality, unbiased, trusted. Available to everyone. Non-profit. Community-based, volunteer-powered.”
Guided by membership in the Metro Nonprofit News Network and the experiences of the Eden Prairie Local News and other online community resources, the CCLN started by compiling candidate statements for the November elections. Since then, it has published articles of general interest to the county and specific pieces related to Carver, Chaska, Chanhassen and Victoria. High school sports, community meetings, scheduled events and human-interest stories have been increasing throughout December, January and February. No-cost subscriptions allow recipients to receive each new article via email. The CCLN web page and Facebook page also allow access to what Mike described as quality, local journalism.
Decisions to publish content are made by an experienced volunteer editor. Links within CCLN web pages allow readers to submit event listings, obituaries, and ideas for articles. A link to the CCLN Events page is included in the Futura’s Upcoming Events section.
Next steps described by Mike include adding volunteer writers and expanding the content; building sponsorships and donors; partnering with an advertising base; and hiring an editor and part-time operating staff. Funding the latter presents the biggest challenge. Mike encourages us to consider our individual talents and interests and to step up and contribute to the CCLN. You will be joining Rotarians Bob Roepke, Dan Keyport and Neil Wingert in building this critical pillar of a thriving and informed community.
Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
