Jean Heyduck announced birthdays and Rotary anniversaries for November. She then had the pleasure of inducting her friend Colleen Luck as a member of our club. Colleen has had a full familiarization with our activities over the past weeks and was all smiles this morning! She has retired from a 34 year-career as a teacher.
Ryan Seibert asked us to help his Public Safety Heroes and Helpers Team and other volunteers wrap presents at the Chaska Target Store on Dec. 7 at 8:30 AM. This fun annual event enables children to pick presents for their family members and enjoy the gift of giving during the holiday season. To enable this, we will have our traditional “pass the hat” donation collection next week. (Friendly competition with the Lions Club which also support the event.)
Cindy Anderson thanked the Rotary Wine Tent workers to raise club funds for Youth Scholarships at the Solseng Tin Shed (AKA SunMeadow Farm link) last week during the Holiday Market.
Sheryl Hough is still excited about our Holiday Auction on December 19. Another holiday-centered date to add to your calendar should include the Chaska Tree-lighting on Dec 8 funded by the Chaska 100 group. Talk with Dan Keyport as soon as you can to join this philanthropic effort.
Ken Hiller presented this week’s club flag from the Tallinn, Estonia Rotary Club. It was personally delivered by their International Exchange student Tom Allmere, 2010-2011. Estonia feels the heat of the Russian bear on its border, and the club is focusing its attention on supporting Rotary efforts in Ukraine. Ken visited during a happier time in 2014, and attended a huge song festival that illustrated the county’s pride in their freedom from the USSR.
ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT – Marcos Alonsos
Marcos was humble as he fluently provided the meeting Invocation in English and Spanish. He is resting from his many Autumn activities and preparing for participation in the school’s Nordic skiing group.
HAPPY DOLLARS
No Finemaster this morning. Happy Dollars were donated by Gretchen Oppriecht, John Roebke, Matt Podhradsky, Peter Ivy, Sheryl Hough, Colleen Luck, Cindy Anderson and Kevin Hegland.
Photos from this well-attended meeting.
Madison Edwards, Summer Mazhary and Marcos Alonsos contribute happy faces, help with setting up the room, collecting fines and happy dollars, and today’s invocation!
Matt Szybnski introduced Mike Phelps, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Ridgeview Medical that has hospitals in Chaska and Waconia, as well as campuses and clinic throughout the area. Mike has visited our club several times throughout the history of the Chaska hospital, and each time he has noted the significant additions that have added their services in support of a healthy community. A fifth floor devoted to Twin Cities Orthopedics is the latest, and Mike indicated Spine Care and Urgent Care will be improved next.
Mike provided a summary of those services and noted 1100 square miles are covered by their ambulance teams. He also was proud to be included with the Mayo Clinic in professional awards within Minnesota. The financial aspects of health care are a top concern for the providers as well as the patients. Post-election changes will undoubtedly occur, but Mike is avoiding definitive guesses about their outcome, especially for facilities and services that are not-for-profit and are tied to government programs like Medicare insurance for compensation.
Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
