Club Announcements

·      Cindy Anderson distributed note cards to share with others advertising a European-style Holiday Market with craft sales.  Gretchen Oppriecht encouraged participation at the Rotary Wine Tent to raise club funds for Youth Scholarships.  It’s scheduled on Nov. 9 + 10 at the Solseng Tin Shed (AKA SunMeadow Farm).  Hours on Saturday: noon – 9 PM; Sunday: 1100 – 1600 (European-style time).   Please let Cindy or Gretchen know when you can help.  Greg Anderson posts event information like this on our Facebook page so that it can be SHARED to reach a broad range of community members.

·      Phil Solseng researched and presented this week’s club flag from Basel, Switzerland. The flag was presented to us by our 2002-2003 Youth Exchange student Antoinette (Toni) von Schweinitz. Toni has maintained contact with her host families for over 22 years – again proving that hosting students yields a life-long benefit.  The flag includes the  coat of arms for the Basel canton – a symbol of a crosier, or the curved top of a bishop’s staff, dating from the 12th century.  The club isn’t quite that old; it was started in 1925 and has about 100 members.  (Link to their web page)  The club meets on Mondays at 12:15 at the Restaurant Schlüsselzunft in Basel.

  • Bob Chinnock reminded mentors of the interview training at the STRIVE meeting this morning.
  • Neil Wingert reiterated the Rotary focus on world peace through understanding and appreciating other cultures.  The Chaska Human Rights event on Oct. 25 highlights the country and people of India at the Lodge in the Community Center at 6 PM.

HAPPY DOLLARS

No Finemaster this morning.  Happy Dollars were donated by Jean Heyduck, Michelle Kraus, Neil Wingert, John Roebke and Matt Szybnski.

ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT - Marcos Alonsos

Marcos is still enjoying the mild weather and having fun going to the Mall of America, going out with other Exchange students and talking with our interns Maddie Edwards and Summer Mazhary at our meetings.

WINTER CLOTHING DONATION

Bob Chinnock picked up our club’s purchase of winter hats and gloves from Rotary District 5950 and brought them to Sarah Carlson. She accessed her list of organizations that are in touch with those who could use help in keeping safe when autumn’s warmth has faded.  Distribution will take place through the activities of eight points of contact.  Sarah and Carol Benetti have served the community in this regard with the operation of the Blessed Bee Thrift Store and annual winter coat drives in past years.

Now, the helping hands are provided by many warm hearts belonging to a wide variety of organizations:

·      Molly Koivumaki– Beyond New Beginnings

·      Jill Edwardsen, Carol Benetti – His House Foundation

·      Nathan Slinde, Jennifer Shin – Clover Ridge Elementary School

·      Melanie Coleman, Evelyn Hasan, Grecia Lozano – Latino VOICES

·      Stacey Busch – Jonathan Elementary

·      Martin Godinez – Chaska Police Community Services

·      Lee Ann Winters – Discovery Methodist Church + Love INC

·      Not pictured – West Creek Apartments

PRESENTATION: Jim Halloran, My Appliance Source

Wayne Ward introduced Jim Halloran, from the family-owned and run Appliance store across the Minnesota River in Shakopee.  Started by his father in 1977 in his Ash Street garage, this customer- and service-oriented business has become a fixture for households (including many Rotarians) who are looking for merchandise that comes with a commitment by its seller.  Jim shared the mission, core values and chief characteristics of his company: Customer Service, Forward Thinking, Dependable, Team and Proud.  He explained that his store does not try to provide every brand available.  Instead, reliable brands are chosen and products are offered that fit in the stages of home ownership and housing needs during a lifetime.

Community support is also part of the store’s philosophy and Jim talked about their chosen specific organizations.  Jim believes that the widespread opinion of equipment having reduced operating spans is true.  His opinion is that because of engineering choices that favor reduced energy consumption there has been a negative effect on longevity of performance.  Many of the audience gave Jim praise and related their long-term loyalty to his store.  He acknowledged our supportive attitude by giving us small laundry detergent scoops that remind us to follow the minimal requirements of current appliances.
