Bob Lindall reminded us of the memorial service for Rotarian Del Ploen, to be held at the Chaska Even Center, Monday, Aug. 5, 4:30 – 7:30 PM. Del’s estate has donated $2,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
During our Social event with the NorthStar Exchange students last month, Phil and Claudine Solseng were visiting Norway with Anna Bjoner, the 1991-92 exchange student they hosted. After keeping in touch for the past 32 years, they shared experiences on Andoya Island, north of the Arctic Circle. Phil was impressed by the effect of the “midnight sun” on his circadian rhythms!
Erin Kerber thanked all the members, family and friends who staffed the Wine Pub at River City Days, especially Cindy Anderson who kept up the liquid inventory during a crushing line of customers during the hot Saturday night! Other helpers: Matt Podhradsky, Greg Anderson, Kevin Hegland, Dave Pokorney, George Glaros, Keith Payne, Celi Haga, Gary Hardell, Dan Keyport, Georgiann Keyport, Andy Haugen, Neil Wingert, Sarah Carlson, Jean Heyduck and Colleen Luck.
FINEMASTER
George Glaros devoted August 1st to the memory of teenage author Anne Frank, whose diary evokes the lasting impression of the German occupation of Amsterdam. Many correct answers were balanced out by the generous Happy Dollars that were given by Bob Roepke, Gary Hardel, Phil Solseng, Cindy Anderson, Kaylee McClellan and Dan Keyport.
Dan was celebrating the publishing of his book “Extraordinary Popular Delusions of Our Times.” Written under the pen name Daniel Martin, the book can be ordered through Amazon.com. (Link)
Presentation: Chaska Human Rights Commission – Sarah Carlson (link)
Neil Wingert introduced Sarah Carlson, the chair of Chaska’s Human Rights Commission (HRC). Sarah’s bio includes many organizations within the community’s full history of taking care of those who might be disadvantaged by circumstance or beyond the mainstream of other residents.
Sarah reviewed the current membership of the HRC, including the position allotted to a student representative. Our intern from 2022-23 Sienna White previously held that role. Brochures provided the goals of the HRC, and Sarah described the activities conducted to achieve those goals. These include a Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast and an annual Human Rights Award, similar in purpose as Rotary’s George Klein award. Other community events have included Women’s History Month, Pride Picnics, Driver's License for All training, African Culture celebration, Day of the Dead display and information booths at events like River City Days and Latin Music + Food Festival.
Sarah concluded her presentation by reviewing the Commission’s 2024 plan to “continue core efforts to create and promote monthly messages or opportunities to encourage active participation in continuing to create a community where all are welcome and engaged.”

Chaska Homelessness Relief, part 2 -"It takes a village ..."
The West Creek apartment complex has been opened to 19 unhoused young people. It is located at 401 Hickory Street in Chaska, across from the school bus depot. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday, July 29.
Bob Roepke represented the Chaska-based Community Asset Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was a principle force behind the creation of this resource. Dave Pokorney, Joel Johnson (Pastor at Westwood Community Church), Bruce Lundgren (Board of Directors), and Heather Godwin (Carver County Health + Human Services) also spoke. The consistent theme for the event was the power of community effort.
Representatives of the many civic and county organizations also attended: Chaska Mayor Windschitl; City Council Members Taylor Hubbard, Makala Hatfield and Mike Huang; County Commissioners Degler, Fahey and Udermann. Current and former Chaska Rotarians were present and contributed in many of the actions preceding the opening: Lisa Anderson, Nate Bostrom, Rick Ford, Dan Keyport, Bob Lindall, Paul Maahs, Bob Moeller, Russell St. John, Richard Scott, and Neil Wingert.
HOST FAMILIES STILL NEEDED! CONTINUE THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT!
Michelle Kraus will be our first host family for our Exchange Student from Spain. He will arrive in a few weeks. Hosts can live outside of Chaska, but the student will attend Chaska High School. Please try to find host families for this amazing, life-long experience!
