Christopher Stein spoke briefly about efforts to preserve habitat for migrating Monarch Butterflies and the Minneapolis Monarch Festival scheduled for Sept. 9 at Lake Nokomis. The Festival is produced by the Nokomis East Neighborhood Association (NENA) and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. He displayed a sculpture depicting the butterfly and the human hands and cooperation needed to sustain the species. Chris is a member of the Twin Cities Eco Rotary Club. Chris is also the Chief, of Heritage Areas and Large Landscapes Initiatives National Park Service, Interior Regions 3, 4, and 5.
Cindy Anderson reminded us of the club’s Fall Social on September 23 at Phil Solseng’s “Tin Shed” located at 16315 Jonathan Carver Parkway. Her studio and others will be open as part of the Carver County Arts Consortium “Art Wander”.
Keith Payne asked us to sign up to help with our Music Fest on October 7.
FINEMASTER: George Glaros
George tested our familiarity with puns. I think the members with students and their sense of humor fared the best. Nate Bostrom unsuccessfully tried to avoid detection. George himself provided some Happy Dollars.
As part of our club’s recognition for Hispanic Awareness Month, Erika Kennedy introduced and translated for Neli Schwartz, a Marketing Executive for Univision Minnesota. Univision is a television and internet-based media enterprise with a Spanish-language and Hispanic community focus. The photo shows Erika (left) and Neli (right).
Ms. Schwartz provided a handout to accompany her presentation that highlighted the economic growth and impact of the Hispanic population in the USA specifically in the Twin Cities. The Spanish-language media providers reach more customers than those that require English as an additional language. The demographics of age and consumer spending showed the growing influence of the Hispanic community. WUMN Univision television channel 17 is provided by Comcast, Charter, and Mediacom to reach more than 86 cities in Minnesota and 69% of the Hispanic audience that is not reached by other media.
