Erika Kennedy introduced Angelina Amerigo, a contestant in the 2023 Miss Minnesota competition, and the current Miss West Central with the Miss America organization. Her social impact initiative is to bring awareness to the over-usage of plastic the need to clean up our rivers, lakes and oceans.
Angelina has been using her talents in acting, dancing, and performing since she was a small child. As we saw in her presentation, competing in the national competitions for the past four years has honed her public-speaking and poise to a professional level. She has obviously learned much about the science of plastics contamination of the oceans and land.
Angelina is involved in Minnesota Rotary’s on-line environmental group. She lives in Minnetonka and has visited six other Rotary clubs to communicate her messages of Education, Inform, and Take Action on her (and Rotary’s) environmental commitment.

Discussion with Gary Cooper provided insight into the use of plastic and paper bags in the grocery industry, and looking at the Styrofoam coffee cups, and plastic water cups brought us face to face with our own contributions to the possibilities of plastics pollution. Our proximity to the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers raised our awareness of the Spring run-off and potential contribution to the ocean rafts of garbage.
