On March 13 we will be announcing the George C. Klein Award for 2013. A breakfast will be served. Past recipients will be invited.
HAPPY DOLLARS
Will you step up and lead our Finemaster program? That could bring in more Happy Dollars – and we need them! Two contributors today: Kevin Eide for an amazing recovery with additional titanium; and Ken Hiller, because he’s a happy kind of guy.
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
Ken Hiller pinned up our latest international Rotary flag – from Pula, Croatia. The inspiring Exchange Student and swimmer Simon Milankovic brought it with him in 2015. Ken showed photos of this wild-hair kid who has become a physician and family man. Ken also shared photos of his trip to visit Simon in his home country. Becoming a Host for a student is continually affirmed as a positive life-changing experience.
Exchange Student: Marcos Alonsos
Marcos is happy with the new school semester and his classes. We learned about his road trip to Wisconsin, ice fishing, lake skating and a birthday party.
PRESENTATION: Gayle Degler, Former Carver County Commissioner
Kevin Eide introduced Gayle Degler, a Carver County Commissioner for 22 years. Although his Degler Family Farm (link) is inside the Chanhassen city area, Chaska and Carver County have been where Gayle has called home his whole life. Born in 1951, Gayle was able to share his memories of life here in the 50s and 60s, and to reflect on the changes that have turned an agrarian community into the diverse and flourishing suburb it is today. Dairy farms along the length of Audubon Road, a downtown with three grocery stores, and a single school, housing all 12 grades, were comparisons we were asked to imagine. That wasn’t difficult for some of us, but our interns may have to look up examples in YouTube.
Doctors making house calls, hospitals mis-diagnosing appendicitis, picking 80 bushels of cucumbers in a day, and brick manufacturing that “paved” the way for one of the best small towns in the country were images that Gayle evoked. History lessons also included the benefits of the “failed” plan for Jonathan, the fight for the Carver County Seat, the 1965 flood that was covered in national news by Walter Cronkite (some of us remember him too link).
Examples of overcoming divisiveness within our country and historical divisions with our city also provided positive notes within his presentation. His post-commissioner time will include helping with the Monday night dinners at St. John’s Lutheran Church and constructing Degler Farm hay bales into roadside attractions. We thank Gayle for his decades of service to the community, and we as Rotarians look forward to continuing his dedication to a better future.
Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
