Julie Janke took a breakfast break from her duties in the Chaska Police Department and invited us to participate in the annual Heroes and Helpers holiday gifting and wrapping event. On Saturday, December 2 at the Chaska Target store, from 9:00 AM to Noon, volunteers will wrap presents purchased by donations and picked out by area children and their police companions. This is a fun event, and this year we need to balance out the number of Lions Club volunteers that participated last year! Because the gifting depends on charitable funding, PLEASE bring some extra cash next week if you can’t volunteer your time to help wrap on the 2nd – thanks!
Bob Chinnock passed out sign-up sheets for mentors working with Chaska High School STRIVE students. Let him know if you’d like spend time after our Thursday meetings with motivated students along with Bob, Sheryl, Ken, Wayne, Erin, Dui and Keith. Gift cards and donations help this program too. Motivation for teenagers can come from many avenues. Here is a photo of Bob with STRIVE students at Feed My Starving Children in 2017.
Michelle Kraus and Keith Payne commented on the Chaska Cares Music Festival. They thanked the many Rotarians and Chaska City employees who organized and delivered a smooth and enjoyable experience for the community. Kaylee Mclellan also received gratitude for selling our Pond Hockey hardware to help fund the Miracle League. More details about the Music Fest will come at our next meeting.
Keith Payne passed around Thank You notes from the Educators Breakfast and one of our STRIVE scholarship students.
FINEMASTER: George Glaros
George Glaros gave us another inspired Finemaster quiz! Today, those of us older than Andy Haugen reached into our memory vaults to tease out details of 1960’s television trivia – back when there was only ABC, CBS and NBC. As always, there were fines paid. Here is a snip from Wikipedia and the 1965 TV schedule, and their Nielsen ratings. The number one show – Bonanza, 9 PM on Sunday Night, on NBC (in COLOR!).
Happy dollars came from Wayne Ward, Neil Wingert, Andy Haugen and guest Julie Janke.
ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT: Viola Bavastro
Viola Bavastro gave a lively accounting of her past week! After finding an Italian-language explanation of American football, she played in a Powder-puff game as part of Chaska High School Homecoming events. She spent a few minutes at the evening dance and then experienced the intricacies of Bowling for the first time. This week Viola also got to attend a once-in-a-lifetime Twins baseball Playoff game at Target Field. Do you suppose there is an Italian explanation of that game?
PRESENTATION: Mary Schneider, The REEL HOPE Project
The REEL HOPE Project and their presenter Mary Schneider were introduced by Peter Ivy. With the belief that “Nothing is more powerful than a story,” Mary illustrated her group’s vision and methodology with videos about the organization, the satisfaction of parents who adopted a teenager, hopeful siblings, and a student (living in Chaska) who expressed his hopes for his future. Since 2016, the REEL HOPE Project has traveled in focus states and captured video stories that celebrate the personality and unique qualities of children in foster care who hope to be adopted. The video “reels” are provided to counties or adoption agencies as a recruitment resource for prospective adoptive families. Their team also shares videos at community events, such as our meeting.
REELHOPE’s vision is “to mobilize the faith community to step into adoption, foster care, and prevention efforts. We serve as a bridge between Church and State, partnering broadly on both sides to see an end to youth waiting for families. We believe in approaching this need from both ends of the spectrum – preventing kids from entering the system and finding families for kids awaiting adoption.”

Note from John Roebke: Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote. Brief 20 – 30 seconds. Light-hearted is okay. Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self. Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations. Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com. I will be glad to name another. If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me. Remind me. If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
