FINEMASTER: George Glaros George Glaros’ Finemaster strategy aimed at another hidden strength of the mild-mannered scientists in our midst -- Chemistry. To his chagrin, rather than dissolve
our confidence by subjecting us to high-school level knowledge questions, our answers precipitated out like Ag + + Cl - → AgCl↓!!!! George kept up his assault until equilibrium occurred, and the donations achieved acceptable mass.
Happy Dollars were adsorbed into the Blue Pig from the wallets of Gretchen Oppriecht, Gary Hardel, Ken Hiller, David Brecht, Erin Kerber, Dan Keyport, Peter Ivy, and guest Bob Kuhlman.
Wayne Ward introduced himself as a stand-in for the scheduled speaker, who was absent. “Illumination” typically has three definitions: 1) lighting or light; 2) the art of illuminating a manuscript; and 3) clarification. In his presentation, Wayne applied those definitions, his skills, and his experience as a Docent for the Pax Christi Catholic Church in Eden Prairie, where one of the seven volumes of the St. John’s Bible is displayed.
From Wikipedia: “The Saint John’s Bible is the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine abbey since the invention of the printing press. The project was headed by Donald Jackson, and work on the manuscript took place in both Wales and Minnesota. Work on the 1,100-page Bible began in 1998 when it was commissioned by the Benedictine monks at Saint John's University, and was completely finished in December 2011 at a total cost of over $8 million. The Saint John's Bible is divided into seven volumes and is two feet tall by three feet wide when open. The book is written on vellum by quill, containing 160 illuminations across its seven volumes, and uses the New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSV-CE) of the Bible.”
Wayne provided a brief history of the project and described the result as a 21st century bible for the 21st century. From the bible’s website: "At the onset of a new millennium, Saint John's University and the monks of Saint John's Abbey sought to ignite the spiritual imagination of people throughout the world by commissioning a work of art that illuminates the world today." Donald Jackson and his team of 23 artists and calligraphers worked for 11 years to achieve that goal.
The Pax Christi church displays the volume that contains the books of Gospels and Acts. Each of the 25 gospels includes a separate illumination. Wayne invited us to schedule time with him or his wife Barbara to show the volume. It will be moved to another location in November. The book is probably like no other that you may have seen -- due to the binding, quality of paper, rich coloration and application of metal foil in the illuminations. Incorporation of modern images and events into the artistry makes viewing the work a unique and memorable experience.
