PRESENTATION: Steve Walker, Carver County Veterans Service Officer
Vic Benetti introduced Steve Walker, the Carver County Veteran Service Officer (VSO). Steve was a member of the Minnesota National Guard for over 20 years. He was deployed four times, working in Armor – Tank operations. The team at his office in the county Government Center provide a variety of help to veterans and their families. Benefiting from eleven years of VSO experience, Steve created a booklet that aids veterans and families receive benefits after the member’s death.
This Personal Record Book can list details of the veteran’s service and medical conditions that are needed to provide deserved assistance and financial support. Three parts of veteran benefits include home loans, education assistance and formal job training. Medical disabilities should be identified while the veteran is still alive, as should applications for grants related to housing, loans employment and transportation. Presumptive exposures based on military service locations, activities and conditions must also be identified to ensure appropriate assistance.
Four thousand veterans in Carver County are eligible to receive Steve’s help. He feels that his work is “super rewarding” and will be glad to help those who contact him.
