Club Announcements

INVOCATION: Matt Szybnski

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Our next meeting, January 18, will be held at Patron Restaurant starting at 4:30 PM.  When our business is done, we will transition to our first BINGO night.
  • On January 11, our club performed the skilled task of Labelling Books that we purchased for distribution at the Hooked On Books and the Arts event.  Eight Rotarians worked in record time to label lots of books. The crew (L to R): Robin Nesburg, Jean Heyduck, Dan Keyport, Dave Pokorney, Sheryl Hough, Neil Wingert, Michelle Kraus, Wayne Ward.

FINEMASTER

George Glaros picked the topic of Real Names of Celebrities, so he could pick on us.  Hopefully there won’t be a quiz about the original appellations of Cher, Bing Crosby, Alice Cooper, Houdini, John Wayne and others.  Happy Dollars from Gretchen celebrated her Quiz Bowl Team success.

EXCHANGE STUDENT: Viola Bavastro

In response to a query at Chaska High School, Viola Bavastro would like a Doctor’s Order so she can sleep in on Thursday mornings.  Apparently, her participation with our club is not as well-known as we’d like!

PRESENTATION:   Martha Brannon, His House Foundation

Martha Brannon directs the His House Foundation to provide housing stabilization, clothing, shelters, food support, and referrals to those experiencing homelessness.

With Rotarian Vic Benetti to the left, and staff member Monica Cox on the right, Martha is displaying the check ($390) from our club that will help provide laundry vouchers for those without other means.  Vic’s recent retirement from his business life has led him to volunteer to transfer HyVee grocery donations that will get distributed where needed.  Martha is using a vehicle to reach folks that have been lucky enough to connect with her Foundation, and she also connects them whenever possible with Carver and Scott County resources for support.

Martha shared several instances of real people in dire circumstances that brought the homeless issue into clarity within our community.  She also noted funding reductions and lack of resources providing shelter.  Greg Anderson was thanked for his efforts to prompt our club’s previous support to Martha.  Resources such as United Way 211, the CAP Agency, and Community Connect were mentioned as some of the lifelines existing locally.  Martha also praised the support and information connections provided by the schools and city Utilities department.

Board of Directors Meeting

Friday, December 15, 2023, | 7:00-8:30 am

“Create Hope in The World”

Attendees: Cindy Anderson, Bob Chinnock, Gary Cooper, Andy Haugen, Gary Hardel, Jean Heyduck, Erin Kerber, Keith Payne, Pat Schaffran, Kristy Miklas

Absences: Nate Bostrom, Michelle Kraus, Steve Mueller, Matt Podhradsky

OLD BUSINESS

1. Action items from November

a. Rotary Shirt (Cindy) – working on adding all shirts to website. Jean will add a link to the Rotary website and all ordering will be through website set up by Cindy.

b. Charitable Giving Process – Jean clarified that she was to recruit a team to review requests before bringing to board. It was suggested to have them be non-board members.

2. Approve the Minutes of the November Meeting. Motion made and approved to accept as submitted.

ROTARY BUSINESS

1. Rotary 2023-24 Calendar

a. Will add a “Rotary Business” meeting once a month instead of having a speaker.

b. Other dates to consider/add.

i. Golf Event

ii. Fall Social 1. Coordinates with Art Wander

iii. Adopt a Highway

iv. Christmas in May

v. Social Events

2. Treasurer’s Report – (Kristy) – Financials are in good shape. No significant outstanding receivables. Have received a few nice donations, including $23,500 from Benefit Bashers (for Miracle League) and $3,500 from German Days, which we are unsure what that is for but Keith will investigate. Made $4,100 from Holiday Auction yesterday. Jean Heyduck was money board winner. Motion made and approved to accept financials.

3. Membership Updates a. Amanda Bloomgren resignation.

ITEMS NEEDING ACTION

1. Waconia -West Carver Rotary Gourmet Wine Dinner Experience (attached)

a. Monday, January 22nd

b. $125.00 per person

2. Chaska Event Center Facility Agreement

a. We are currently reviewing costs with the Event Center

b. Considering breakfast from an outside vendor. Dunkin Donuts – could do breakfast sandwiches. Keith is working on getting a quote.

ITEMS FOR UPDATE OR DISCUSSION

1. Bingo (Keith) – Can have up to 5 events with a fee of $150 per event. If you have more than 5 events, the fee will go up to $750 per event and hire a manager. So we may have to change to quarterly BINGO instead of monthly. There are also forms that have to be filled out after each event and the funds can only be used for specific items. Keith will forward information received from Gambling Board. Cindy suggested instead of quarterly, we do monthly events for 5 months in a row to establish traction and establish a pattern of consistency with attendees.

2. Fundraising Update on Miracle League Field (Matt) – tabled due to Matt’s absence.

3. Meeting Speakers – Nate will be a hard act to follow and it will be a challenge to find somebody with the dedication and drive to singlehandedly recruit all speakers. Speakers are set up through Jan 25th. Gary and Cindy related that in the past, when members were required to recruit speakers, there was always a connection between the speaker and a member and at times it was more relatable. The Board should not discount using members to find speakers. If we set up a schedule, like with invocation, members have time to find one to two speakers each year. Cindy made a motion to make a yearly list of hosts for guest speakers like in the past. Gary Hardel seconded the motion. Motion unanimously approved.

4. Other Business – Erin still has two coolers of beer and seltzers in her garage. Since this was provided to us free, Erin wants to just donate it to get it out of her garage. Jean Heyduck will take some for her neighborhood happy hours. Will see if we can donate any to Patrons. May save some for a club social in January.

UPCOMING DATES

December 21 & 28 No Meeting

January 11 New Member Happy Hour

January 18 Bingo

February 10 Hooked on Books…and Arts, too!

Upcoming Invocation

Note from John Roebke:  Invocations can be a faith traditional prayer, or a meditation, or inspirational verse or quote.  Brief 20 – 30 seconds.  Light-hearted is okay.  Option: focus on our Mission of Service Above Self.  Need an idea – Google Rotary Invocations.  Not a personal talent? Don't wait, tell me NOW, 612-790-7067, john.roebke@live.com.  I will be glad to name another.  If I forgot that you told me not a talent, please forgive me.  Remind me.  If not a good DATE, trade with a mate.
