Dan Keyport introduced Bill Wermerskirchen, the owner of Bill’s Toggery, a men’s clothing provider in Shakopee, MN. Now in its 3rd generation, Bill’s Toggery has been a family-owned business since 1931 Known for its big and tall department, the store’s friendly and attentive staff cater to hard to fit men, but their inventory also has distinguished brands in regular sizes as well. Billy described the business’ milestones over the last 75 years, including his grandfather starting it with $150 during the Great Depression. The business history includes changes in location, expansion, contraction, changing styles, and rapidly evolving levels of sartorial interest by men and their spouses. Billy described the trials of keeping a family business alive against all odds. His Rotarian grandfather managed the enterprise for 46 years; his father was the leader for another 37 years; and he took the reins in January this year, after starting work there in 1985. Facing the challenges posed by technology-based shopping, big store pricing competition, and the casual/jean culture of this decade, Bill is counting on the personal touch with customers, a staff that is directed to help rather than sell, and the belief that small communities like Chaska and Shakopee can help support each other’s small businesses.
