Notes From Our Most Recent Meeting
Tammy Ryder-Harms, Kaleidoscope Teens
George Glaros introduced Tammy Ryder-Harms, the founder of Kaleidoscope Teens. From her slide presentation: Our mission is to be the uniting force in our community by empowering parents, caregivers, schools, and community partners in supporting teens in developing coping and life skills, paired with a career and/or college pathway, that allows them to thrive in today’s world and successfully launch into their futures.
Both of Tammy’s daughters have attended the Integrated Arts Academy in Chaska, so Tammy expressed gratitude for the benefits her family has received from our community and resources. She has been active in helping teens and their families for twenty years and responds to referrals by mental health programs, doctors, schools and police. Her focus on mental health and suicide prevention depends on community support in the forms of mentorship, presentations to teens, providing meals and financial donations. Recent activities have included programs that develop life skills for adapting and prospering in the adult world. More examples of her group’s efforts are described in their web pages – https://kaleidoscopeteens.org.

STRIVE Update
March 21, 2024 STRIVE MEETING
Bob Chinnock and six more Rotarians met with the Chaska High School students. Bob provided the following schedule of future meetings and content:
- April 4, 2024: We will do mock job interviews.
- April 25, 2024: We will bring out the goal plans from the first session and see if the students are where they planned to be. Students and Rotarians will critique the year and if possible, students should rate the benefit of each event. Students will share their plans for post high school graduation.
- May 9, 2024 at Chaska Event Center, 7:15 to 8:30AM: Students and their parents will attend a Rotary Scholarship Breakfast and be awarded Scholarship Certificates.
- May 16, 2024: We will not meet with our current senior STRIVE students on this date. We will instead meet with a group of Junior students to discuss participation in the STRIVE program next year when they are seniors.
PRESENTATION: Erin Kerber - Finance Management
Erin kept students and Rotarians involved in a personal finance management exercise and discussions about spending choices, priorities and sensible credit decisions. The exercise started when 20 beans were “paid” to each student, along with a sheet of alternatives for where they could spend the money they received from their first full-time employment after finishing school. The choices included housing, food, transportation, insurance and the rest of life’s myriad of needs and wants. Reflecting the real possibilities in their future, Erin then asked the students to forfeit seven of their 20 beans. We discussed what deductions they made and from which categories. Then, they were confronted with a physical injury which would result in a loss of more beans unless an insurance option had been taken. The discussion opened some eyes about the impact of unexpected circumstances. Erin then showed her benevolent nature and gave everyone a two-bean raise to see where it would be spent. Credit cards, credit scores, and spending choices that are affected by advertising and peer pressure moved the discussion towards the choices all of us make, regardless of where we are in our lives. A great meeting, with lots of student interaction. THANKS Erin!
